BOOK REVIEW: Resisting Her by Kendall Ryan

Resisting Her by Kendall Ryan

Published: April 15th, 2013
Genre: New Adult | Contemporary
Format: Kindle [mobi]

Overall:

goodreads | amazon

Summary: Agent Cole Fletcher lives for his job at the FBI, and he’s more than ready for his next assignment—raiding a cult compound and putting their leader behind bars. But he isn’t prepared for Savannah and her knock you on your ass good looks. At nineteen, she’s too old for foster care and too damaged to live on her own. With nowhere else to go, and against his better judgment Cole takes her in.

But helping her out won’t be easy. He comforts her through screaming nightmares and escaping the lingering fears of her past, but that’s the easy part. Her preference to sleep cuddled up next to his warm body, and her desire to please him in every way makes her harder and harder to resist.

Review:
From the beginning, this book felt like a story I would read on literotica, just with a bit more depth and better filler between the sex[y] scenes. But it's borderline smut... what do you expect? With that being said, this wasn't necessarily a poorly written book, it just didn't blow me away. And honestly, throughout the entire thing, I didn't see when/what/why they were so drawn together. More on her part than his.

She is a girl who never got to experience any sort of normal life outside of the compound she was trapped in, and when she gets to stay with someone new it's different, and she latched on. I felt like he took advantage of her from the beginning, her vulnerability; and he states that, numerous times, so he knows too, but it doesn't stop him.

Savannah's supposed to be this 19 year old girl who is virginal, and saintly, and innocent in all aspects of the word, but is way too comfortable climbing into Cole's lap any time she feels threatened. Because that's what you do right? You, as a 19 yr old girl--having no experience around men--climb into the lap of a 28 yr old man, whom you do not know, because he could possibly be trustworthy. Honey.... the thoughts  in his head are not of the "let me protect you against all evil, including myself," variety.
I was waiting for the moment when a lightbulb would go off and she'd think "I want to experience what it's like to be a young adult just entering her 20s. I want to go to school, move out on my own, meet people, and just live." No. No... it's all about Cole. He's there so she basically worships him, and takes care of him, cooking every day, cleaning, snuggling up to him in his bed every night and every great once in awhile she'll remember "hey... I think I may be my own person.".... And then she looks at Cole and poof, she is his to do what he will... if he just would.

Now don't get me wrong, this book wasn't all bad. As obvious by my 3 star rating. There were moments when I enjoyed seeing them together. And that he suggested she get a job that fit what she knew how to do (working in a daycare, taking care of other people, surprise), getting her a dog so she can sort of put her energy and smothering on something else.
Though I did cringe at the sex scenes a bit (read above), they were well written. So there's that.

I would like to read more from Kendall Ryan. Hopefully with a relationship that seems like both sides are completely engaged in.

Running away from home was never Chloe Kowalski's plan. Neither was ending up the target of killers, or having her body change in unusual ways. She only wanted a vacation, someplace far from her crazy parents and their irrational fear of water. She only wanted to do something normal for once, and maybe get to know her best friend's hot stepbrother a bit better at the same time.

But the first day she goes out on the ocean, strange things start to happen. Dangerous things that should be impossible. Things to which 'normal' doesn't even begin to apply.

Now madmen are hunting her. A mysterious guy with glowing blue eyes is following her. And her best friend's stepbrother seems to be hiding secrets all his own.

It was supposed to be a vacation. It's turning out to be a whole lot more.

Excerpt

Zeke

I’d been out near the Santa Lucina coast for a few hours, ever since leaving Nyciena earlier that morning, and I hadn’t found any sign of Ina the entire time. I knew she liked to visit here – the surfers were a favorite of hers to watch – but this time, it seemed she’d tried to be a bit more conniving about sneaking away from home.

Coming to a stop in the water, I grimaced. At this time of day, she was probably joining some tourists for a cookout on the beach or playing around with some new guy she’d spotted on the sands. She had clothes stashed everywhere, did my twin sister, and she loved an excuse to party with humans.

I sighed and checked around briefly. This close to land, nothing below the water was much of a threat, since divers were even simpler to spot after dark and most sharks knew better than to mess with a dehaian.

Fishing boats were similarly not a problem, since they were easy to hear from miles away and stank besides. Assured that in my annoyance at Ina, I hadn’t missed anything, I flicked my tail in the water and sent myself up to the surface. Air burned on my skin for the heartbeat it took my body to adjust, and I scanned the beach, my eyes compensating easily for the dark.

It was absurd that I had to be the responsible one.

My grimace returned. I could have been home right now, making friends with the Deiliora twins. Ina wasn’t the only one who enjoyed a party, and damn if those girls weren’t sexy as hell. And even if that hadn’t worked out, there was also the sirabal championship for all of Yvaria tonight, and I’d wagered three-to-one that the Nycienan Hammerheads would take the title this season.

But instead I was spending the evening hunting for my sister.

Scanning the shore, I didn’t see Ina among the tourists and beachgoers on the sand. She might’ve decided to find some cove from which to watch the storm brewing back out on the water, however, which meant she could be anywhere. Muttering a curse, I dove down again and headed farther up the coastline.

It wasn’t even like it was my job to go after her. Dad had any number of people he could have ordered to the task. Hell, he could have sent either of our older brothers as well. But Dad also knew Ina made a game of evading them all where she didn’t with me, which meant I got pulled away from my plans and sent to chase her down.

Again.

The water shivered.

I stopped, and then kicked hard up to the surface and scanned the coast.

Everything was the same. There was no earthquake. No explosion. I spun in the water, looking out to sea, but besides the thunderstorm rolling in from a few miles away, nothing at all had changed.

Except quivers still ran through the water around me, like someone had dropped an electrical wire into the ocean.

My brow drew down as I turned back toward the shore. A fire pit burned by a mansion up on top of the bluffs and bright lights shone on a handful of people playing volleyball. Down by the shoreline, a guy sat on a boulder in the shadows, watching a beautiful girl with auburn hair as she dipped her feet into the water.
I paused, studying her. Moonlight glistened on her pale skin and she smiled as her gaze ran across the dark waves. She gave no sign she noticed anything strange about the water. She just radiated calm, as though in the whole world, she was right where she wanted to be.

And her skin was changing.

My alarm returned.

A pale shimmer crept up her legs, the iridescence so faint that only the right angle of the moonlight revealed the alteration. My eyes narrowed, my vision sharpening enough to pick out the hint of scaling inching up from the waterline toward her calves.

And then she turned, seeming startled by a word from the boy, and the iridescence began to swiftly melt away. She hesitated, saying something I couldn’t make out, and then she walked back toward him, leaving the waves and crossing the sand to sit by his side.

The quiver in the water vanished.

My brow climbed.

There was no way she’d been causing that.

Walking down the lane from the pub I decide to take a detour to the beach. The light is fading but the glimmer of light from the sun setting on the horizon is just enough that I can make my way down the path without landing on my face.
I spend a lot of time on the beach at night. This isn’t like the beach in Newquay which is filled with drunks attempting to get it on under the cover of darkness. Our quiet beach in St Agnes is perfect for a solitary ten minutes. If I go home now I know Aunt May will be twitching around me like she has the last half a year, ever since my life ended at the end of one drunken night. She doesn’t know what to say to help my get out of the ‘phase’ I’m going through. Six months in, I think we can rule out the chance of it being a phase. This is just me. I’m a guy without a plan. Aunt May tries, but having her wandering around wringing her hands, asking me every three minutes if I’m hungry and need some food is not a relaxing way to spend an evening.
I don’t know what people want. Do they expect that one day I will wake up and suddenly be over the fact that I carelessly lost my girlfriend one night?
As I walk down onto the beach I keep thinking of Faye’s words. “Bridge Cottage.” “Painting.” “Mum and Dad.” They hammer inside my head.
I know everyone is waiting for me, for some resolution. They want to know that I’ve let go of the past, and that if I can do it, they all can too. But I can’t. I want them to, but I can’t do it myself. I can’t even acknowledge to myself what happened. I can’t even think about it or let the thought enter my mind.
Small steps, that’s what a counselor told me a few months ago. “Just take small steps, Josh, and everything will work out.” Today I have picked up a paint brush and drunk a pint of cider. That’s got to be two small steps in the right direction. I’m not sure what direction those things are taking me in, but it’s heading somewhere at least.
As I tread over the dark sand I can see someone sitting on my rock. That’s just plain rude. Everyone knows it’s mine.
Edging myself closer, I slip off my flip flops and sink my toes into the cool sand as I walk down the beach and try to get close enough to investigate without being seen.
It’s her.
My feet come to a grinding halt.
I want to move in the opposite direction but my damn legs won’t listen. Instead I stand there, looming behind her on the sand, like an axe murderer.
“I can see your silhouette in the sand.”
Busted.
“What are you doing?” On my rock?
“Thinking. What are you doing?”
“Thinking too.”
“That’s nice.
“Yes it is.”
I stand there like an idiot working out what to say next. “Nice bangles.”
Thanks. They make me walk like a percusssion instrument.
“Why so many?”
“None of your business, dreadlock boy.”
“Well you’re a charmer aren’t you?”
“I was sitting here first. You’re the one with the stalking, stealth-like sand walk.”
“It’s my rock.” It’s my rock? It’s my rock? Really. . .?
She does not say anything. Let’s be realistic there is not much to say to that comment. She just sits there looking out to the sea, and I stand there my feet sunk into the cool sand.
“I like your dreadlocks," she says after an age has passed.
“Thanks. They're a lifestyle choice.”
She turns to look at me and for a moment, just one brief moment my mind swirls with colours. The make-up is gone and the waning sun illuminates her skin. She look different. So different. A better different.
I should walk away. I don’t talk to holiday makers unless I’m taking their money in the shop.
I don’t.
Instead I fold my legs and sit on the sand, my fingers automatically picking up a splinter of driftwood as I cast my eyes up at the sun and then I start to draw.
“So do you have a name girl with the bangles?” I’m trying to remember what the young girl who was with her in the shop called her yesterday. Becca? Something like that?”
Turning to me with a frown on her face she bites her lower lip. Jeez, I only asked her name.
The frown and the angry glare instantly make me recall her name. “Bex.” I answer for her. The frown deepens.
“No one calls me that, only my sister.”
“Well I don’t know what else to call you?” I prompt. Her feistiness is rather amusing, it’s actually doing a good job of distracting me from the usual shit I try to keep out of my head.
Her top lip curls a little in distaste at my goading. She really doesn’t want to tell me her name. Who doesn’t want people to know their name? My eyes flick over her with a little more interest. She is rather pretty. Hot, Dan would call it. But I would go with pretty. Pretty is a more delicate sounding word, easy to pair with the freckles and flame hair.
Oh good god. I’ve realized what I am doing? I’m looking at another girl. I try and turn myself away from her a little. She must register the motion because she speaks, her voice low like she is sharing a secret.
“Rebecca.” She clears her throat. “My name is Rebecca.”
Something about her low tone makes me cast my eyes back over her. Well not exactly willingly, my eyes just won’t damn behave themselves and head straight back to the smooth sunlit skin.
She looks nervous, her fingers brushing over her overload of bangles.
“Does Rebecca have a second name?” My feet do this bizarre thing where they scoot over the sand towards her toes.
“No.”
“What no surname? So you are Rebecca No Name?”
She scowls further. “Yes. I am Rebecca No Name.”
Her tone and the death stare she lays on me make me do something I am not expecting in the least. I laugh. Fucking loud. I laugh like I never stopped.
“Well Rebecca No Name. I am Joshua Adams, it’s a pleasure to meet you and your bangles.”
I lean forward and shake her hand my fingers grazing against hers, sand rolls between our connected skin.
Rebecca No Name digs her toes into the sand, burying them deep. “Walters. It’s Rebecca Walters.”
“Bex Walters, now that has a nice ring to it.”
“It’s Rebecca Walters.” She spits her name out like it burns her lips to say it.
“Okay, okay.”
“So Rebecca Walters where are you on holiday from?”
“Nowhere.”
Seriously. It’s like talking to a wall. I don’t even know why I am still sitting here. This makes an evening with Aunt May look like a social highlight.
I get up and start to brush the sand from my legs.
The girl with attitude stares up at me from the ground and I hesitate. “London. I come from London, and I’m not on holiday. My family have moved into Bridge Cottage.”
Just like that the air gushes out of my lungs. The girl with the attitude and the wrong clothes and the frown lives in the house that I was fully expecting to move into one day. The cottage I expected to grow old in.
I sit back on the sand with a bump.
“I am leaving though, in two weeks.” Her gaze is on the sea as she speaks. “Two weeks. I’ve just got to get through two weeks.” She repeats almost to herself.
Two weeks of what?
“Who are you running from?”
Rebecca, Bex, the girl with the attitude turns to me, her eyes hidden in the shadows of the dipping sun. “Myself.”
And that I just don’t know how to answer, so I don’t. I pick my stick back up and start to draw some more.

MOVIE REVIEW: Vampire Academy

Vampire Academy

Zoey Deutch - Rose Hathaway
Lucy Fry - Lissa Dragomir

Review: I haven't read the books that everyone else has--I never felt interested enough. But the trailer for this movie sucked (ba-dum-tss) me in and I had to watch. I rented the movie and made cookies & cream popcorn, ready for disappointment. But I surprisingly enjoyed it!

Because I haven't read the books, I had no idea what would actually happen in this movie. I didn't know any of the characters or the basis for the movie. And for that reason I felt like I was in the dark for some of it. Some things seemed jumped over or random or just out of place. I would guess it would be because they assumed most viewers have read the book.

All of that aside, I loved the casting. Especially Rose, played by Zoey Deutch. Everything from her one-liners to her physical movements, she was just purely enjoyable and my favorite thing about the movie. Her fighting stance and physicality made me want to work out and possibly take up some sort of boxing training or Tae Kwon Do. I kind of want to be a bad ass.

The Vampires. Even though this movie is called Vampire Academy, and everyone is a vampire, or half vampire (aka Dhampir) I didn't feel focused on that aspect at all. Is was more directed towards the friendships, romance and basic high school drama with the exception of Lissa being a vampire princess and trying to keep her and everyone else safe from the Strigoi. Basically they're rogue & evil vampires with no remorse for any one or anything.

The ending left enough open that (I'm hoping) they'll go ahead with the sequel, Frostbite.
I may even read the first few books in the series by then.

If you haven't read the books, I recommend you watch this movie. It's funny, has action, romance, and a kick-ass heroine. I won't recommend if you've read the books, only because I don't have an inkling on how they compare. But if you've read the books and seen the movies, let me know what you think!!
